Everyone is scared of being burglarized and, unfortunately, in today’s world, that fear is an all-too-real one. The good news is that there are measures that you can take to protect yourself and your property. You should buy or rent a home in the safest possible neighborhood that you can for starters. Also, one of the most important things you can do is to invest in a good, reliable home security system. Sometimes, though, no matter how much we plan, robberies do occur. While you might very well be burglarized by a complete stranger, theft does sometimes occur via those whom you trust and let into your home. Items commonly kept in a safe include jewelry, family heirlooms, cash, saving bonds, important records and documents, and cherished keepsake items, like photographs. Getting a fireproof and waterproof safe is a wise idea, since your items are protected from fire, water, and smoke damage as well as from theft. Keep in mind, however, that even with a good safe, it is always wise to insure costly personal items. However, many items, such as jewelry, can be expensive to insure, and if you can’t afford the cost, a safe is a good way to still maintain some level of security.
The size of your safe will play a large part in where you are able to house it. Some safes are built into walls or other areas, allowing them to contain a large number of items without taking up space and being obvious to intruders and thieves. If you choose a safe that isn’t built-in, then examine your home for areas that are not very noticeable and that serve as a good hiding spot. Behind large pieces of furniture, tucked underneath paintings or artworks, and inside of locked closets or storage rooms are a few good ideas.
In addition to choosing an inconspicuous spot for your safe, you also have to make sure that you choose a quality safe. Some safes are harder to break into than others. Look for one that is made by a reputable manufacturer, that has some kind of warranty or guarantee, and that allows only certain people to access it. Many safes have combination locks, coded entries, or even voice or fingerprint activation systems to deny access to the wrong people. If there is a code that you must remember, be sure to write it down and keep it in a secure place, away from the safe. Keeping the combination tucked into your wallet or on or near your person at all times is a wise idea. If you follow these tips, then you are sure to get a lot of use and, most importantly of all, comfort and security out of your safe.
